The KENNAMETAL 1818503 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This left-hand insert carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which improves wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted cuts and continuous grooving in steel, cast iron, and similar workpiece materials. The KC5025 grade is a coated carbide formulation suited for a broad range of grooving applications. With a 1.83 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 2.39 mm, this insert is built for precision narrow-groove work where dimensional consistency and edge integrity matter. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary installers and users of this insert.
This insert fits turning and grooving applications in general machining environments, including production shops and job shops running metric-dimensioned workpieces. The NG3072K geometry with a positive rake angle of 10 degrees promotes lower cutting forces and cleaner chip evacuation. The K chip breaker geometry supports controlled chip formation in moderate-feed grooving passes. It is suited for both light-production and precision grooving operations where left-hand tool orientation is required by the toolholder configuration.
Designed for use with Top Notch series left-hand grooving toolholders that accept the NG3072K insert style. Confirm toolholder pocket geometry and insert seating requirements before installation.
Grooving inserts of this type are seated and clamped by a CNC machinist or toolroom technician following the toolholder manufacturer's clamping torque and seating procedure. Ensure the toolholder pocket is clean and free of chips or debris before seating the insert. Verify insert orientation and hand designation against the toolholder specification before powering the spindle. Do not use an insert with a damaged cutting edge or coating, as edge failure can compromise workpiece dimensions and machine integrity.
