The KENNAMETAL 1818370 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured to the NG3047K geometry in the Top Notch series, this insert carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, delivering strong wear resistance and thermal stability in demanding cutting conditions. The left-hand configuration controls chip flow and tool engagement for specific toolholder orientations. With a cutting width of 1.19 mm and a maximum depth of cut of 1.91 mm, this insert targets fine-width groove profiles in ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. It is installed by machinists and CNC lathe operators working in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for external grooving, groove turning, and parting applications on turning centers where metric tooling is specified. The KC5025 grade with PVD TiAlN finish performs well in interrupted cuts and at elevated surface speeds. The Top Notch series is a common platform in production turning shops. The left-hand designation determines the required toolholder pocket orientation, and the K chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation in medium-depth groove passes. Typical applications include groove profiles in steel, stainless, and similar materials at light to moderate feed rates.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for Top Notch series external grooving toolholders accepting NG3047 geometry inserts in left-hand configuration. Verify toolholder pocket hand and insert size designation before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing any insert. Use the correct torque tool or clamping screw specified for the Top Notch toolholder to secure the insert without over-tightening the clamp. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert, as pocket damage can affect insert seating and dimensional accuracy.
