The KENNAMETAL 1818122 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process, this insert delivers elevated heat resistance and wear performance in demanding cut conditions. It features a 4.8 mm cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 6.35 mm, and a positive rake angle of 10 degrees, reducing cutting forces and improving chip control. The KC5025 grade is suited for finishing to medium roughing on steel, stainless steel, and difficult-to-machine alloys. Installed by CNC machinists and tool-and-die professionals in production turning environments.
This insert is configured for left-hand cutting orientation and carries a K chip breaker geometry with a corner radius of 0.57 mm and an included angle of 55 degrees. It is dimensioned to metric measurement standards with an insert size designation of 3189. Typical applications include grooving operations on shaft components, hydraulic cylinder parts, and precision turned workpieces where controlled chip evacuation and consistent groove width are required. The positive rake geometry reduces tool pressure, making it appropriate for slender workpieces and lower-rigidity setups where deflection is a concern.
Designed for use with KENNAMETAL Top Notch series toolholders that accept the NGD insert style in size 3189. Confirm toolholder insert pocket specifications before installation to ensure proper seating and clamping.
This insert is installed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom personnel. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket and secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified procedure. Inspect the insert seat and clamping components for wear or debris before installation to avoid improper seating, which can cause insert fracture or dimensional inaccuracy.
