The KENNAMETAL 1818042 is a solid carbide grooving insert carrying the NG2125K designation and KC5010 manufacturer grade. It features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted cuts and continuous grooving operations on steel and cast materials. The insert delivers a cutting width of 3.18 mm (0.1252 inches) and a maximum depth of cut of 2.79 mm (0.1098 inches). The positive rake angle of 10 degrees and K-style chip breaker promote clean chip evacuation in tight grooving applications. This insert is intended for use by machinists and toolroom technicians working on CNC lathes and turning centers.
This insert is suited for external grooving and part-off operations on CNC turning equipment in job shop, production, and maintenance machining environments. The right-hand cutting orientation and 55-degree included angle make it appropriate for standard OD grooving on ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces. It belongs to the Top Notch series, a widely adopted indexable grooving system used in both light-duty and moderate-production turning applications. The insert size designation is 2125, and the material grades C3 and C4 indicate suitability for machining cast iron and general-purpose steel alloys.
Designed for use in Top Notch series grooving toolholders that accept NG-style inserts with a 2125 insert size designation. Compatible toolholder references include systems listed under the MSC/Manufacturer Number NG2125R/LK. No additional compatible model numbers were specified in the product data.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle at a complete stop and all motion axes locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully into the Top Notch toolholder pocket and confirm the clamping mechanism engages the top notch securely before resuming cutting operations. Inspect the insert seat for chips or debris before indexing or replacing the insert, as contamination can cause insert rocking and premature edge failure. Handle carbide inserts with care to avoid chipping the cutting edge prior to use.
