The KENNAMETAL 1817977 is a solid carbide grooving insert from the Top Notch series, designed for precision external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which provides thermal resistance and extended tool life on ferrous and hardened materials. It delivers a cutting width of 1.19 mm and a maximum depth of cut of 1.27 mm, making it well suited for narrow groove profiles and light finishing passes. The KC5010 grade, combined with a positive rake angle of 10 degrees, promotes clean chip formation and reduced cutting forces. This insert is sold individually and is intended for installation by machinists and tooling technicians.
This insert is engineered for metric grooving applications in production turning environments, both job-shop and high-volume manufacturing. The right-hand orientation suits standard lathe setups. With an included angle of 55 degrees, a lead angle of 3 degrees, and a corner radius of 0.09 mm, it is appropriate for tight-tolerance groove profiles in steel, alloy steel, and similar C3 to C4 material grades. The K chip breaker geometry controls chip flow in shallow groove applications where chip evacuation is critical to surface finish quality.
Designed as a Top Notch series grooving insert for use in compatible Top Notch toolholders and grooving systems that accept the NG insert style in size 2047. The MSC and manufacturer cross-reference number for this insert is NG2047R/LK.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing any insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before installing the insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque guidance for the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture carbide inserts.
