The KENNAMETAL 1817870 is an indexable chamfer angle face mill designed for precision milling operations on machining centers and CNC mills. Built to the KSSM series standard, this cutter accepts four SEKT 1404 inserts secured by screw-lock retention for consistent insert positioning and repeatable cutting performance. The body accommodates a 1 inch (25.40 mm) arbor hole and delivers a maximum cutting diameter of 3.691 inches with a maximum depth of cut of 6.6 mm (0.26 inches). At a 45-degree chamfer angle and coarse pitch, it is suited for aggressive face milling and chamfering passes in steel, cast iron, and similar workpiece materials. Licensed machinists and CNC operators are the primary installers and users of this tooling.
This face mill is applied in production and job-shop environments where face milling, shoulder milling, and chamfer generation are performed in a single pass. The right-hand cut orientation and coarse pitch spacing support chip clearance in heavy-feed applications. The cutter body is sized for mid-range spindles common in VMCs and HMCs, and the 1 inch arbor hole fits standard shell mill arbors widely used in production environments. With a maximum rated speed of 18,000 RPM, it is compatible with both conventional and high-speed machining strategies depending on insert grade selection.
Compatible with SEKT 1404 series inserts. Cutter style is KSSISR within the KSSM series. Fits standard 1 inch shell mill arbors with a keyway width of 0.39 inches.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer's spindle interface specifications. Ensure spindle power is off and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before mounting or dismounting the cutter body. Torque insert screws to the toolholder manufacturer's specified value using the correct Torx or hex key to prevent insert movement during cutting. Verify arbor runout with a dial indicator after mounting before initiating a cut.
