The KENNAMETAL 1817740 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and turning operations. Manufactured in the NG style as part of the Top Notch series, this insert carries the KC5010 grade designation and features a physical vapor deposition (PVD)-applied TiAlN coating for improved wear resistance and tool life at elevated cutting temperatures. It is a right-hand insert with a 4.00 mm cutting width, a maximum depth of cut of 3.81 mm, and a 0.32 mm corner radius. The positive rake angle of 10 degrees and K-style chip breaker geometry support controlled chip evacuation in a range of workpiece materials. This insert is handled and installed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians in production and job-shop environments.
This insert is suited for grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers in both production and maintenance machining environments. The KC5010 grade with TiAlN coating is appropriate for use on steel, cast iron, and similar workpiece materials where PVD-coated carbide grades in the C3 and C4 material grade range are specified. The K chip breaker designation targets medium-feed finishing to light roughing groove profiles. The Top Notch series tooling system provides the mating holder and clamping interface for this insert style.
Designed for use with Top Notch series grooving toolholders that accept NG-style inserts. Compatible holder reference from supplier data: NG3M400R/LK. Verify holder bore and clamping configuration before installation.
This insert is installed and changed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before removing or seating any insert. Use the appropriate Top Notch clamping screw and torque driver as specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten or substitute fasteners. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping surfaces for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and runout.
