The KENNAMETAL 1817721 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying the NG2041K designation within Kennametal's Top Notch series, this insert features a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, delivering improved wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. The insert has a cutting width of 1.04 mm, a maximum depth of cut of 1.27 mm, and a corner radius of 0.09 mm. The K-style chip breaker geometry promotes controlled chip evacuation in a wide range of workpiece materials. Installed and replaced by machinists and CNC tooling technicians, this insert suits high-volume production turning environments where consistent grooving accuracy is required.
This insert is suited for grooving operations on small-diameter workpieces in metric-dimensioned setups. The right-hand orientation and neutral rake angle make it compatible with standard Top Notch grooving toolholders. The KC5025 grade, rated for material grades C2 and C6, is appropriate for machining steels and other metals where PVD-coated carbide provides a balance of toughness and wear resistance. It is commonly used in precision component manufacturing, medical parts, and automotive turning applications where tight groove width tolerances are critical.
Designed for use with Top Notch series grooving toolholders that accept the NG insert style. Verify toolholder seat size and clamping style against the NG2041 insert size designation before installation.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer's torque and clamping specifications. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe lockout state before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating the new insert. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut rating during operation.
