The KENNAMETAL 1817718 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This left-hand insert carries the NG2031K geometry within the Top Notch series and is coated with TiAlN via a PVD process, providing thermal resistance and wear protection at elevated cutting speeds. The KC5025 grade designation indicates a tough, coated carbide substrate suited for a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials. With a cutting width of 0.79 mm and a maximum depth of cut of 1.27 mm, this insert is intended for fine, tight-tolerance groove profiles. A licensed machinist or CNC toolroom technician is the typical installer.
This insert is applied in production and job-shop turning environments where narrow groove widths and controlled depth are required. The positive rake angle of 10 degrees promotes free cutting action and reduces cutting forces, making it well suited for finishing passes and for grooving thin-walled or deflection-sensitive workpieces. The K chip breaker geometry assists with chip evacuation in confined groove profiles. Applications include groove finishing on shafts, hydraulic components, and precision mechanical parts machined from steel, stainless, and similar materials in both light and medium-duty cuts.
Designed for use with KENNAMETAL Top Notch series toolholders that accept the NG2031K insert size. Confirm toolholder hand and seat geometry before installation.
Grooving inserts of this type are seated and clamped by a licensed machinist or CNC toolroom technician using the appropriate Top Notch clamping mechanism — never use excessive force when seating the insert, as carbide is brittle and will fracture if the pocket is misaligned or contaminated. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips, burrs, or wear before installation, and verify insert orientation matches the required hand for the programmed toolpath. Follow the machine manufacturer and tooling manufacturer feed and speed recommendations to avoid premature edge failure.
