The KENNAMETAL 1817620 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for precision grooving operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Identified by insert style NG and grade designation NG3M100K, this insert carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, delivering strong oxidation resistance and extended tool life at elevated cutting temperatures. It provides a 1.00 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 1.91 mm, making it well suited for narrow, accurate grooves in a wide range of workpiece materials. Machining professionals and toolroom technicians working with carbide-grade tooling will recognize this as a right-hand, positive-rake insert built for controlled chip formation.
This insert is intended for use in Top Notch compatible grooving toolholders in production turning environments, including both manual and CNC lathe applications. Its K chip breaker geometry and 10-degree rake angle support consistent chip control during external and face grooving. The metric insert size designation 3M100 places it in applications requiring fine grooving tolerances. It is commonly used in job shop and production machining operations where repeatable groove width and depth accuracy are critical. This insert is sold individually but is subject to a minimum order quantity of 5 pieces per order.
Designed for use with Top Notch series grooving toolholders that accept NG-style inserts with insert size 3M100. Confirm toolholder seat geometry and clamping style before installation.
Grooving inserts of this type are installed and replaced by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the lathe spindle before accessing the toolholder. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to secure the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the insert seat for chips or contamination before seating the new insert, as debris under the insert can cause premature failure or dimensional inaccuracy.
