The KENNAMETAL 1808583 is a solid carbide grooving insert designed for precision external grooving and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Designated style NGD3125K with manufacturer grade KC5025, this insert features a physical vapor deposition (PVD) TiAlN coating that provides high heat resistance and extended tool life in demanding cutting environments. The right-hand orientation, 0.125-inch (3.18 mm) cutting width, and a maximum depth of cut of 0.250 inches (6.35 mm) make it suited for consistent, repeatable groove profiles in production machining. It is installed by CNC machinists and toolroom professionals working with ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials.
This insert fits the Top Notch series toolholding system and is intended for use in grooving applications where controlled chip evacuation and groove geometry accuracy are critical. The K chip breaker geometry promotes positive rake cutting action, reducing cutting forces on the workpiece. It is commonly used in job shop and production turning environments machining steel, alloy steel, and similar materials classified under material grades C2 and C6. The 55-degree included angle and 10-degree rake angle support clean groove entry and finish in both interrupted and continuous cuts.
Designed for use in KENNAMETAL Top Notch series grooving toolholders accepting NGD-style inserts. Cross-reference manufacturer designation NGD3125R/LK applies to this insert style and size.
Installation and indexing of grooving inserts should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician with the machine powered down and the spindle fully stopped. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert clamp to the correct seating torque per the toolholder documentation. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before seating the insert. Follow all applicable shop safety and machine guarding procedures during insert changeover.
