The KENNAMETAL 1801779 is a solid carbide grooving insert in the Top Notch series, designed for external grooving and turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which improves wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted cuts and continuous grooving passes. The insert has a 1.58 mm cutting width and a maximum depth of cut of 2.39 mm, with a full-radius nose geometry and a 0.79 mm corner radius. Neutral rake geometry suits a broad range of workpiece materials at standard cutting parameters. Licensed machinists and CNC toolroom technicians are the primary installers and users of this insert.
This insert is suited for grooving and profiling applications in precision machining environments, including job shops, production turning cells, and tool-and-die operations. The KC5010 grade with TiAlN coating is typically applied to steel, cast iron, and hard materials where abrasion and heat resistance are priorities. It is right-hand oriented and sized as an NR3031 insert style, fitting Top Notch compatible toolholders designed for that insert size. The 55-degree included angle supports V-profile and partial-profile grooving work where a full-radius corner is required.
Designed for use with Top Notch series toolholders accepting the NR3031 insert size. Compatible toolholder reference from manufacturer is listed as NR3031R/L. Verify toolholder seating and clamping style before installation.
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and in a locked or e-stopped state. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat and torque the insert clamp screw — do not overtighten or substitute fasteners. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Handle carbide inserts carefully to avoid chipping the cutting edge prior to use.
