The KENNAMETAL 1783138 is a DNMG432FW KT315 cermet turning insert designed for high-wear-resistance metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a PVD-applied multilayer TiN/TiCN/TiN coating over a cermet substrate, delivering extended tool life on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. The insert carries a 55-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a neutral hand orientation, a honed cutting edge, and a wiper finishing chip breaker geometry. With a 0.5 inch inscribed circle, a corner radius of 0.0313 inches, and a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches, this insert is optimized for light finishing passes requiring tight surface finish tolerances.
This insert is suited for finishing and semi-finishing operations including turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring. It is a strong fit for production environments where consistent surface finish on steel and stainless steel components is critical. The FW wiper chip breaker geometry enables higher feed rates while maintaining fine surface finishes, reducing cycle times on high-volume turning jobs. Cast iron applications also benefit from the high wear resistance of the KT315 cermet grade. Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a locked-out, zero-energy state before any toolholder access. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Use the appropriate clamp or pin retention method specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut for this insert geometry, as overloading a finishing insert can cause edge fracture.
