The KENNAMETAL 1777131 is a polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN) turning insert designed for precision metal cutting operations on hardened ferrous materials. Coated with TiAlN via a PVD process, this CDHB-style insert delivers thermal resistance and edge wear performance in demanding turning applications. It features an 80-degree diamond insert shape with a neutral hand orientation, a positive rake geometry, and a flat-top chipbreaker. The inscribed circle measures 5/32 inches (0.1563 inches), with a corner radius of 1/64 inches (0.0156 inches) and a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). Licensed machinists and tooling professionals install and index this insert as part of a screw-on toolholder system.
This insert is suited for finish and semi-finish turning of hardened steels, cast irons, and similar difficult-to-machine materials in both production and job-shop environments. The single-tipped PCBN construction makes it appropriate for applications where CBN-grade tooling outperforms carbide, such as hard turning operations that eliminate or reduce grinding steps. Material grades C4 and C8 designate its fit for interrupted and continuous cut conditions on ferrous workpieces. Manufacturer grade K00379 corresponds to the SPM5F2 geometry series.
Designed for use in screw-on CDHB-style toolholders compatible with the CDHB12061 insert size code. Conforms to ANSI and ISO insert standards. Verify toolholder seat geometry and screw hole diameter (0.0840 inches) before installation.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine fully powered down and the spindle locked. Seat the insert firmly against the toolholder pocket before tightening the clamping screw; follow the toolholder manufacturer's torque guidance for the screw-on retention system. Inspect the insert seat and screw for wear or debris before indexing to the second cutting edge. Handle PCBN inserts with care to avoid chipping the cutting edge prior to use.
