The KENNAMETAL 1743770 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external NPT thread cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Carrying ISO code LT16ER18NPT and manufacturer grade KC5025, this right-hand insert is ground to 18 threads per inch and is finished with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating that provides thermal resistance and wear protection during high-speed threading operations. The 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle and 3.44 mm thickness conform to standard ER-style laydown geometry, making it a direct fit for compatible ER-profile threading toolholders. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production or job-shop environments are the primary installers.
This insert is suited for threading external NPT pipe threads on workpieces made from steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. The NPT thread standard requires a tapered profile, and the insert geometry is purpose-ground for that application. It is commonly used in production threading of hydraulic fittings, pipe nipples, and instrumentation components where leak-free tapered connections are required. The KC5025 grade is a PVD-coated carbide optimized for interrupted cuts and the harder workpiece materials listed above.
Designed for use in ER-style laydown threading toolholders that accept a size-16 insert with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. Compatible workpiece materials stated by the manufacturer include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine powered off and the spindle locked. Use the appropriate torx or clamp key specified for the toolholder to secure the insert without over-torquing the clamp screw. Verify insert orientation for right-hand external cutting before running a test pass. CNC programmers should confirm thread pitch and taper angle settings in the threading cycle match the NPT standard before production runs.
