The KENNAMETAL 1724834 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread cutting at 12 threads per inch (TPI). Manufactured to ISO code LT16ER12UN and offered in grade KC5025, this insert features a PVD-applied TiAlN coating that promotes heat resistance and extended edge life at the cutting zone. With a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.1430 inches (3.44 mm), it is sized for LT-style toolholders. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators performing right-hand external threading operations on precision components.
This insert is suited for threading operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. The KC5025 grade with TiAlN finish handles the elevated cutting temperatures and interrupted-cut demands that come with threading tough ferrous and exotic alloys. Typical applications include production threading on CNC lathes and turning centers where consistent thread form and insert-to-insert repeatability are required across high-volume runs.
Designed for use in LT16 ER-style laydown threading toolholders that accept a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully into the toolholder pocket and torque the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification — do not estimate or overtighten freehand. Verify thread form and pitch with a thread gauge on the first part before running production.
