The KENNAMETAL 1724736 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert for external UN thread cutting. It carries the ISO designation LT16ER18UN and is ground and coated to Kennametal grade KC5025 with a PVD-applied TiAlN finish. This insert cuts right-hand external UN threads at 18 threads per inch (TPI) using a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle form. At 0.143 inches (3.44 mm) thick, it seats in standard ER-style laydown insert holders. It is engineered for threading operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium in CNC lathe and turning-center environments.
This insert is suited to production threading on external diameters where UN thread form accuracy and tool life across difficult materials are priorities. The KC5025 grade with TiAlN coating is built for interrupted and continuous threading passes on a range of ferrous and high-temperature alloy workpieces. A licensed machinist or CNC turning technician installs this insert into a compatible ER-style laydown threading toolholder for use on manual lathes or CNC turning centers. The 18 TPI pitch targets thread forms common in general industrial fastener and fitting applications.
Designed for use in ER-style laydown threading insert holders that accept size 16 inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. Compatible workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium as stated by the manufacturer.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to clamp the insert securely — do not overtighten the clamping screw by feel alone; follow the torque specification on the toolholder documentation. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating to ensure proper insert orientation and surface contact.
