The KENNAMETAL 1724735 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread cutting at 20 threads per inch (TPI). Carrying the KC5025 manufacturer grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability during threading operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. The insert features an ER-style geometry, a 3/8 inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle, and a thickness of 0.143 inches (3.44 mm). It is installed by machinists and CNC lathe operators performing precision external thread turning on production or job-shop components.
This insert is suited for external UN threading applications on lathes and turning centers in both production and maintenance machining environments. The right-hand cutting orientation makes it appropriate for standard right-hand thread profiles. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium, making it a versatile threading solution across industries such as aerospace, oil and gas, and general manufacturing. ISO code LT16ER20UN identifies the insert geometry and thread specification for direct replacement ordering.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for LT16ER20UN-specified toolholders accepting ER-style laydown threading inserts with a size code 16 and 3/8 inch inscribed circle. Confirm toolholder specifications before ordering.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists following standard CNC or manual lathe insert-change procedures. Power down and lock out the spindle before removing or seating the insert. Use a calibrated torque wrench per the toolholder manufacturer specifications when securing the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and subject to fracture under excessive clamping force. Verify insert seating and alignment before resuming cutting operations.
