The KENNAMETAL 1724412 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for external thread cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured in the LT16ER style and running the KC5010 carbide grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, this insert delivers consistent thread form across a 14 to 8 TPI range with a partial profile 60-degree thread standard. The 3/8-inch inscribed circle and 3.44 mm thickness place it firmly in the LT16 insert class. It is installed and changed by machinists and CNC operators performing threading operations on ferrous and non-ferrous workpieces.
This insert is suited for right-hand external threading applications in production turning environments. The partial profile 60-degree geometry covers unified and metric thread forms where a full-profile insert is not required, making it a versatile option across mixed-thread-standard shops. The KC5010 grade with TiAlN finish is engineered for wear resistance in interrupted and continuous threading cuts at moderate to high surface speeds. Typical applications include threading of shafts, fasteners, fittings, and hydraulic components on manual or CNC lathes.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement threading insert for toolholders accepting the LT16ER insert style with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle seating format.
Installation is performed by machinists or CNC toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the insert. Ensure the insert pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque guidance for the clamping screw; do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and can fracture under uneven clamping load.
