The KENNAMETAL 1713440 is a solid carbide indexable drill insert designed for use in indexable drilling applications requiring consistent hole quality and tool life. It carries the DFTMD insert style designation and is manufactured in Kennametal grade KC7140, a PVD-coated carbide grade with a TiN and TiCN multilayer coating that improves wear resistance and edge retention. The insert features a Trigon (84-degree included angle) shape with an MD chipbreaker geometry, a 12 mm (0.4724 inches) inscribed circle, and a 0.80 mm corner radius. It is installed by machinists and tooling technicians in production drilling operations on CNC machining centers and drill presses.
This insert is suited for indexable drilling in ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials where C5 and C6 material grade classifications apply. The MD chipbreaker geometry supports chip control in through-hole and blind-hole drilling scenarios. Typical applications include production machining in automotive, aerospace, and general metalworking environments where repeatable hole geometry and tool change efficiency are priorities. The insert is packaged individually and sold in minimum order quantities of five units.
Designed as a DFT-style indexable drill insert for use in compatible Kennametal indexable drill bodies requiring DFTMD insert geometry with insert size 070408. Confirm holder compatibility with the insert size and inscribed circle dimensions before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the tool holder secured in a vise or fixture before seating or indexing the insert. Use the correct Torx or hex key driver to the insert screw torque specification listed in the holder documentation - do not estimate torque by feel. Inspect the insert pocket seating surface for chips or damage before installing a new insert to ensure proper contact and edge registration.
