The KENNAMETAL 1712570 is a solid carbide laydown threading insert designed for right-hand external UN thread cutting at 14 threads per inch (TPI). Carrying the ISO designation LT16ER14UNCB and manufactured in grade KC5025, this insert features a PVD-applied TiAlN coating that supports extended tool life in demanding materials. The 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle and 0.1430-inch thickness conform to standard ER insert geometry, making it a direct fit for compatible laydown threading toolholders. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators performing external thread turning on lathes and turning centers.
This insert is suited for threading operations on steel, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. The CB chipbreaker geometry helps manage chip flow during external UN thread profiling. Typical applications include production threading on turned components in job shops, aerospace, oil and gas, and general manufacturing environments where consistent thread form and insert-to-insert repeatability are required.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard production insert for laydown threading toolholders accepting size 16 ER-style inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine in a fully stopped and locked-out state before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully in the toolholder pocket and torque the clamping screw per the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Inspect the seating surface and pocket for chips or debris before installing a new insert. Handle carbide inserts carefully to avoid chipping the cutting edges prior to use.
