The KENNAMETAL 1698208 is a laydown threading insert designed for internal threading operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the KC5025 carbide grade with a PVD-applied TiAlN coating, delivering wear resistance and edge stability in a wide range of ferrous and difficult-to-machine materials. The insert profiles a 60-degree partial thread form, covering 48 to 8 TPI, and is ground to a 3/8-inch (9.53 mm) inscribed circle with a thickness of 0.1430 inches (3.44 mm). Right-hand cutting orientation. This insert is specified and installed by machinists and toolroom technicians performing precision internal thread work.
This insert suits internal threading applications in production and job-shop turning environments. It is used in laydown-style toolholders accepting the 16NR insert style. The partial profile 60-degree form makes it suitable for cutting Unified, metric 60-degree, and similar thread standards without a dedicated form per pitch, allowing one insert to cover a broad TPI range from 8 to 48. Typical applications include threading bores in steel, stainless, cast iron, and high-temperature alloys where a PVD-coated carbide grade is appropriate.
Designed for use in 16NR-style laydown threading toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert. Verify toolholder seat geometry and insert retention method before installation.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing the insert. Secure the insert in the toolholder using the appropriate torque driver per the toolholder manufacturer specification - do not overtighten the clamping screw. Confirm insert orientation and thread hand before taking the first threading pass; a trial pass on scrap or a test cut is standard practice when changing inserts mid-run.
