The KENNAMETAL 1624431 is a VNMG331FN turning insert in grade KT315, designed for precision finishing operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. The insert is manufactured from cermet substrate and carries a multilayer PVD coating in a TiN/TiCN/TiN sequence, which delivers high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. The VNMG geometry features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a neutral hand orientation, a 0.0156-inch corner radius, and a negative rake with zero-degree relief angle. With four usable cutting edges per insert, it is a cost-effective solution for high-volume turning applications requiring tight tolerances and consistent surface finish.
This insert is suited for finishing passes on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron in both residential-shop and industrial production environments. Typical applications include turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring. The FN chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing cuts with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm), making it appropriate for light, precise material removal where surface quality is the priority. It is held in KENLOC-style toolholders using a clamp-and-pin method.
Designed for use in KENLOC-series toolholders accepting VNMG-style inserts. Conforms to ANSI insert code VNMG331 and ISO insert code VNMG160404. Suitable for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring of steel (P), stainless steel (M), and cast iron (K) workpiece materials.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket surfaces before engaging the clamp and pin, and verify there is no rocking or gap before taking a cut. Follow the toolholder manufacturer torque specifications for the clamp screw — do not overtighten, as cermet is brittle and susceptible to fracture under uneven clamping load.
