The KENNAMETAL 1623337 is a solid carbide indexable drill insert designed for use in indexable drilling operations where precision and cutting-edge durability are critical. This insert features the DFTHD geometry with an 84-degree included angle (Trigon shape) and a KC720 manufacturer grade. It carries a Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD)-applied TiN coating, which extends tool life and reduces built-up edge in demanding drilling applications. The inscribed circle measures 17.60 mm (0.6929 inches), thickness is 0.1941 inches, and the corner radius is 0.60 mm (0.0236 inches). The HD chipbreaker designation indicates this insert is optimized for heavy-duty chip control. Installation is typically performed by machinists and CNC tooling technicians in metalworking environments.
This insert is suited for indexable drilling applications in ferrous and non-ferrous metalworking, including milling centers and CNC drilling stations. The KC720 grade with TiN coating makes it a practical choice for general-purpose drilling across a range of workpiece materials classified under material grades C1 through C5. The DFTHD insert style and HD chipbreaker geometry are selected when chip evacuation and edge stability are priorities in high-feed or interrupted-cut drilling scenarios.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or standard-inventory insert for indexable drill bodies that accept the DFTHD insert style with an insert size designation of 110506 and a 5.85 mm mounting hole diameter.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine spindle fully stopped and all energy sources locked out per applicable machine safety procedures. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the drill body manufacturer to seat and torque the insert clamp screw - do not overtighten. Inspect the insert pocket for debris or damage before seating the new insert. Indexable carbide inserts are brittle; handle carefully to avoid chipping prior to installation.
