The KENNAMETAL 1615978 is a tension and compression tapping chuck with a CAT40 taper shank, designed for use in CNC machining centers and tapping operations. It accepts taps ranging from M1 to M14 (up to 9/16 inch), delivering controlled float in both tension and compression to protect tap life and thread quality. The chuck features a quick-change interface with a Size 1 tap adapter, a projection of 2.96 inches, and a nose diameter of 1.42 inches. Tension and compression travel each measure 0.59 inches. This tool is installed by machinists and tooling technicians in production and job-shop environments.
This tapping chuck is suited for vertical and horizontal machining centers running CAT40 spindles. It is used in applications requiring accurate thread production in a wide range of tap sizes, from small-diameter M1 taps through medium-duty M14 taps. The quick-change design allows fast tap swaps during production runs. The 3/4 inch (0.75 inch) hole diameter accommodates standard tap adapter shanks. It is appropriate for both ferrous and non-ferrous tapping applications where spindle reversal or rigid tapping compensation is required.
Designed for use with CAT40 spindle machining centers using a Size 1 tap adapter. Tap capacity range is M1 to M14 (maximum 9/16 inch). Through-coolant is not supported by this chuck body.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before mounting or removing the chuck. Ensure the CAT40 taper and spindle bore are clean and free of chips or debris before seating. Torque the retention knob according to the machine tool manufacturer specifications for CAT40 tooling.
