The KENNAMETAL 1557823 is a ceramic turning insert with a VNGA332T0420 industry standard designation, designed for high-performance material removal on hard workpiece materials. It carries the KY4400 grade classification, built on an alumina TiCN substrate with a PVD-applied TiN coating for extended edge life. The insert geometry is a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) V-shape with a flat-top chip breaker, T-land cutting edge, and neutral hand orientation. Four cutting edges are available per insert, and the KENLOC series clamp-and-pin holding method provides rigid, repeatable seating in compatible toolholders. Clearance code is N (negative side clearance) and tolerance code is G, conforming to both ANSI and ISO standards.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations on hard materials, classified under primary workpiece material code H. It is a multi-use insert appropriate for CNC lathes and turning centers in production and job-shop environments. The 35-degree included angle makes it well-suited for profiling and contour turning passes where clearance is a priority. Typical installers are machining technicians and CNC operators working with hardened steels, hard cast irons, and similarly difficult-to-machine materials. The flat-top chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip formation at the cutting conditions suited to ceramic-grade tooling.
Designed for use in KENLOC series toolholders accepting VNGA-style inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thickness, and clamp-and-pin holding. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and clearance angle requirements before installation.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machining technician with the machine in a full stop, locked-out condition. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not substitute fasteners. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or debris before seating the insert, as contamination causes micro-movement and premature edge failure. Ceramic inserts are brittle; handle with care and avoid impact loading during setup or tool changes.
