The KENNAMETAL 1556849 is a solid carbide milling insert in the XDMT series, designed for high-performance milling operations in steel and stainless steel applications. It carries the ISO designation XDMT150308R and is manufactured to the KC715M grade, a PVD-applied multilayer TiN/TiCN/TiN coating that promotes wear resistance and edge durability at elevated cutting speeds. The insert measures 0.3752 inches wide and 0.1252 inches thick, with a 0.0315-inch corner radius and a 15-degree relief angle. A screw-mounted, single-sided design with a right-hand cutting orientation makes setup straightforward on compatible milling toolholders.
This insert is intended for use in face milling, shoulder milling, and general-purpose milling operations targeting steel (ISO material code P) and stainless steel (ISO material code M). The KC715M grade is suited for both roughing and semi-finishing passes where a tough, coated carbide substrate is required. Typical users include CNC machinists and toolroom technicians running production or job-shop milling programs. The parallelogram insert shape and XDMT series geometry are commonly found on indexable milling cutters used in horizontal and vertical machining centers.
Designed as a replacement or replenishment insert for XDMT-series indexable milling cutter bodies that accept XDMT150308R geometry inserts with a 0.1732-inch screw hole diameter. Verify toolholder specifications against the XDMT insert size code 150308 before ordering.
Installation should be performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician with the spindle fully stopped and the machine locked out per facility safety procedures. Use the correct torx or hex key to torque the clamping screw to the toolholder specification — refer to the toolholder manufacturer documentation for fastener requirements, as no torque value is specified for this insert alone. Inspect the insert pocket for debris or damage before seating the insert, and confirm the insert is fully seated before resuming operation. Handle carbide inserts carefully to avoid chipping the cutting edge prior to use.
