The KENNAMETAL 1545213 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting M4 x 0.7 metric coarse internal threads in ferrous and stainless materials. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers extended tool life and reduced galling in difficult materials. The plug chamfer configuration distributes cutting forces over multiple leading threads, making it suitable for through-hole tapping operations. With a 2-flute spiral point geometry, chips are pushed ahead of the tap rather than packed into the flute, helping maintain clean threads and reducing the risk of tap breakage in production environments. Licensed tradespeople and machinists use this tap in manual and CNC tapping applications across fabrication, maintenance, and repair work.
This tap is suited for through-hole tapping in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel. The 6H thread class of fit meets standard metric tolerance requirements for general mechanical assemblies. The D4 thread limit designation indicates oversize compensation to account for TiN coating buildup and material springback, maintaining dimensional accuracy in the finished thread. It is commonly used in job shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments where consistent metric thread quality is required across a range of ferrous workpiece materials.
Designed for tapping M4 x 0.7 metric coarse through-holes in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. Compatible with standard tap holders and floating tap chucks accepting a 0.168-inch shank diameter.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician using a properly sized tap wrench, tapping head, or CNC rigid tapping cycle. Ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured and the tap is aligned perpendicular to the workpiece surface before engagement. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material - sulfurized oil for steel, water-soluble coolant for stainless - to extend tap life and improve thread finish. Inspect the tap for wear or chipping before each use; a damaged tap should not be reused.
