The KENNAMETAL 1544603 is a 3/4-10 UNC straight flute hand tap designed for threading operations in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel workpieces. Manufactured from high-speed steel with a titanium nitride (TiN) coating, it delivers improved wear resistance and extended tool life compared to uncoated HSS taps. The plug chamfer style features a 3-5 thread lead-in, making it well suited for through-hole tapping applications. With 4 flutes and a right-hand thread direction, the tap produces clean, consistent threads when driven by a standard tap wrench or machine spindle. The H3 thread limit provides a controlled tolerance fit for standard UNC fastener assemblies. Overall length is 4.25 inches with a thread length of 2 inches.
This tap is intended for use in general metalworking and maintenance applications requiring 3/4-10 UNC internal threads. It is appropriate for both shop and field use in industrial, manufacturing, and heavy equipment service environments. The TiN coating reduces friction during cutting, which is particularly beneficial when tapping harder materials such as stainless steel. The 0.59-inch shank diameter is compatible with standard tap holders and wrenches sized for 3/4-inch taps. Typical users include machinists, tool and die makers, millwrights, and maintenance technicians working in fabrication or repair settings.
Designed for cutting 3/4-10 UNC internal threads in cast iron, stainless steel, and steel. Compatible with standard tap wrenches and machine tap holders accepting a 0.59-inch shank diameter.
Hand taps should be installed in a properly sized tap wrench or tap holder; ensure the workpiece is securely fixtured before beginning threading. Apply appropriate cutting fluid for the material being tapped, particularly when working with stainless steel, to reduce heat buildup and prolong tap life. Back the tap off periodically to break chips when tapping deep or blind holes. Always wear appropriate personal protective equipment and follow shop safety procedures when operating cutting tools.
