The KENNAMETAL 1542599 is a spiral point tap designed for cutting internal threads in through-hole applications. Built from high speed steel (HSS) with a bright, uncoated finish, this tap produces a 3/8-16 UNC thread profile using a plug chamfer and three flutes. The spiral point geometry pushes chips forward ahead of the cutting zone, reducing clogging and improving performance in through-hole work. With an overall length of 2.9375 inches and a thread length of 1.25 inches, this tap suits standard tapping depths on production floors, machine shops, and maintenance applications alike. Installation is typically performed by machinists and maintenance technicians using tapping machines, CNC machining centers, or hand-tapping equipment.
This tap is suited for use in cast iron, ductile iron, and non-ferrous metals. The 3/8-16 UNC thread form and Class 2B fit tolerance make it appropriate for standard fastener clearances in general mechanical assemblies. The H5 thread limit designation indicates a controlled oversize of 0.003 inches, which accounts for material spring-back and ensures the finished thread falls within Class 2B tolerance. Plug chamfer taps are the most common choice for through-hole tapping where adequate chip clearance is available and where a starting chamfer of moderate length is acceptable.
Designed for through-hole tapping operations in cast iron, ductile iron, and non-ferrous metals requiring a 3/8-16 UNC Class 2B internal thread. Part of KENNAMETAL Series 5301.
This tap should be installed and operated by a qualified machinist or maintenance technician familiar with tapping operations and cutting tool safety. Always power down and de-energize the machine before changing tooling. Use an appropriate cutting fluid or tapping compound recommended for the workpiece material to extend tool life and improve thread quality. Ensure the tap is properly aligned with the hole axis before engagement to prevent tap breakage or thread damage.
