The KENNAMETAL 1540475 is a straight-flute hand tap designed for cutting internal threads in a variety of workpiece materials. It produces a 5-40 UNC thread profile with a right-hand direction and a plug chamfer, making it suitable for through-holes and deeper blind holes where gradual thread engagement is needed. The tap is ground to an H2 thread limit and left with a bright, uncoated finish. High-speed steel construction provides the toughness and wear resistance required for production tapping in cast iron and non-ferrous metals. Overall length is 1.94 inches with a thread length of 0.625 inches.
This tap is used in machining and fabrication environments where small-diameter, fine-pitch threads must be cut by hand or with a tapping fixture. It is suited for cast iron and non-ferrous metal workpieces in both job shop and maintenance settings. The 3-flute straight-flute geometry provides good chip clearance and consistent thread form at this small diameter. Machinists, tool-and-die makers, and maintenance mechanics install this type of tap when repairing or creating threaded holes in light-duty assemblies, fastener applications, and instrument or equipment housings.
Designed for cutting 5-40 UNC internal threads to class 2B and 3B fit in cast iron and non-ferrous metal workpieces. Part of the KENNAMETAL Series 5305 and 5303 hand tap families.
Hand taps of this type are installed using a standard tap wrench or a T-handle wrench; secure the square shank fully before applying torque. Ensure the workpiece is clamped securely and the tap is started perpendicular to the hole to avoid thread misalignment or tap breakage. Apply an appropriate cutting fluid for the workpiece material — sulfurized oil for cast iron, light cutting oil or lubricant for non-ferrous metals. Back the tap off periodically to break chips and prevent binding in blind holes.
