The KENNAMETAL 1528421 is a 2.5-inch diameter indexable insert drill designed for general-purpose drilling in metalworking and machining applications. Built to the DFT series standard, it accepts two DFT0905 indexable inserts and delivers a maximum drill depth of 5.63 inches (143 mm) at a 2.5xD depth-to-diameter ratio. The tool body is constructed from steel and features a 2-inch Weldon Flat and Flange straight shank for rigid, positive retention in compatible spindles. Coolant-through capability is supported via axial concentric entry, with side and shank-end coolant ports for efficient chip evacuation and heat management during deep-hole drilling cycles.
This drill is suited for production and job-shop environments where consistent, repeatable hole quality is required in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. The 2.5xD ratio makes it well-matched to applications requiring moderate depth without pilot drilling. It is installed and operated by machinists and CNC tooling technicians on vertical and horizontal machining centers, as well as manual and CNC lathes with driven tooling. The DFT insert platform and compatible insert size code 0905 allow straightforward insert indexing without removing the body from the spindle.
Compatible with DFT-style indexable inserts, insert style code DFT0905., and insert size 0.391 x 0.207 inches (9.92 x 5.25 mm). Designed for use with the KENNAMETAL DFT series insert drill system. Insert lock screw specification is M5-0.8 x 12.5 T20.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and de-energize the machine spindle completely before mounting or removing the drill body or indexing inserts. Secure the shank fully into the holder to the minimum engagement depth required for the Weldon Flat and Flange interface. Verify coolant port connections are clear and properly threaded before initiating a cutting cycle.
