The KENNAMETAL 1528401 is a DFT-series indexable insert drill designed for general-purpose drilling in metal fabrication, machining, and production environments. The body is machined from steel and accepts two DFT-style inserts in a right-hand cutting configuration. With a maximum drill diameter of 1.75 inches and a drill depth-to-diameter ratio of 2.5xD, it covers a 4.1-inch flute depth in a single pass. The Weldon Flat and flange shank design provides secure tool holding in compatible holders, and integrated coolant-through capability supports chip evacuation and tool life in demanding applications. A licensed machinist or tooling technician handles installation and setup.
This drill body is suited for production drilling operations in machining centers and CNC turning or milling setups where indexable tooling is preferred over solid carbide drills. The 2.5xD depth ratio makes it appropriate for moderate-depth holes in steel, cast iron, and similar machinable materials. The Weldon Flat plus flange shank provides positive drive and axial location in standard tool holders. Coolant-through routing supports high-feed drilling cycles where chip control and heat management are critical to hole quality and insert life.
Compatible with DFT-style inserts, insert size code 0704, decimal size 0.313 x 0.187 inches (7.94 x 4.75 mm). Insert lock screw specification is M3.5-0.6x12 T15. Designed for use in tool holders that accept a 1.5-inch diameter Weldon Flat and flange shank.
Installation and tool setup should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician familiar with indexable drilling systems. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts or mounting the drill body. Verify that the tool holder clamp and set screws are torqued to the holder manufacturer specifications before operation. Confirm coolant lines are properly connected and coolant flow is verified before beginning a drilling cycle to prevent premature insert wear.
