The KENNAMETAL 1522175 is an indexable insert drill designed for production drilling applications in metal-cutting environments. Built on the DFT series platform, this drill accepts two DFT-style inserts with an insert size code of 0302, delivering a maximum drill diameter of 0.838 inches at a 4xD depth-to-diameter ratio, with a maximum drill depth of 2.75 inches. The body is constructed from steel and features a 3/4-inch Weldon Flat and Flange shank for secure tool holding. Overall length is 6.25 inches. Coolant-through capability with axial concentric entry supports chip evacuation and tool life in high-feed drilling operations. This tool is installed by machinists and tool room technicians in CNC machining centers and manual drill press setups.
The 1522175 is suited for general-purpose drilling in ferrous and non-ferrous materials where indexable insert tooling is preferred over solid carbide for cost-per-hole efficiency. The 4xD ratio makes it appropriate for moderate-depth holes in workpieces where through-coolant delivery is beneficial. The Weldon Flat and Flange shank style is a common interface for side-lock tool holders and milling chucks used in machining centers. The DFT insert platform allows quick insert indexing without removing the drill body from the spindle.
Compatible with DFT-style inserts using insert size code 0302 (insert size 0.156 x 0.096 inches). Insert lock screw specification is M2-04x4.8T6. Designed for use in tool holders accepting a 3/4-inch Weldon Flat and Flange shank interface.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool builder guidelines for side-lock or Weldon-style tool holders. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe locked-out state before inserting or removing the drill body. Verify insert seating and torque the insert lock screw per the insert manufacturer specification using the appropriate T6 Torx driver before cutting. Confirm coolant line connection and flow before initiating the drilling cycle to protect insert life and promote chip evacuation.
