The KENNAMETAL 1270954 is an indexable boring bar designed for precision internal turning operations in metalworking and machining applications. Built with a solid carbide shank and a steel head, this tool delivers the rigidity and vibration resistance required for tight-tolerance bore work. It accepts CDC-style inserts held in place by a screw clamping method and operates with a positive rake angle of 5 degrees, reducing cutting forces and supporting clean chip evacuation. The 1/4 inch shank diameter and 0.285 inch minimum bore diameter make it well suited for small-diameter bore work, and the integrated coolant-through capability helps manage heat and extend insert life during continuous cuts.
This boring bar is intended for use in CNC turning centers, manual lathes, and live-tool turning applications where small-bore internal turning or finishing is required. Its compact geometry targets applications in precision component manufacturing, aerospace, medical device machining, and general job-shop work. The solid carbide shank construction makes it particularly effective in long-overhang or high-speed scenarios where steel-shank tools would exhibit excessive deflection. It is typically installed by machinists and CNC programmers working to tight bore tolerances.
Compatible with CDC-style inserts with an inscribed circle of 0.156 inches and an insert thickness of 0.040 inches. Toolholder style is CCBI. Refer to current insert catalogs for approved CDC insert grades and geometries that pair with this holder.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist following standard lathe or CNC turning center setup procedures. Secure the shank firmly in a tool block or boring bar holder to the correct centerline height before operation. Verify coolant-through connections are properly engaged if using the internal coolant feature. Never exceed the recommended maximum bore depth of 2.5 inches or operate without confirming insert seating and screw torque are within the insert manufacturer's specifications.
