The KENNAMETAL 1198184 is a VBMT33211 KT315 cermet turning insert designed for high-wear-resistance machining of steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. It features a multilayer PVD coating stack of TiN, TiCN, and TiN, which provides a hard, slick surface that resists flank wear and built-up edge at elevated cutting speeds. The insert geometry is neutral-hand with a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a positive rake angle of 5 degrees, and a honed cutting edge style suited for finishing operations. With a 0.0313-inch corner radius and a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches, this insert is optimized for light, precision finishing passes rather than heavy roughing.
This insert is suited for CNC turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring applications on lathes handling steel (P-grade workpieces), stainless steel (M-grade), and cast iron (K-grade) components. Typical install scenarios include finish-turning shafts, bores, and flanged parts where tight tolerances and fine surface finish are required. The screw-on holding method locks the insert positively into compatible VBMT-style toolholders. The chip breaker code 11 geometry promotes efficient chip control during light finishing cuts at higher surface speeds.
Designed as an OEM-style screw-on replacement insert conforming to ANSI insert code VBMT332 and ISO insert code VBMT160408; fits compatible VBMT-style screw-on toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Before replacing inserts, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped, the program is paused, and power is isolated per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate Torx or hex-key screw driver to seat the insert clamp screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specification. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamping screw threads for wear or debris before seating the new insert.
