The KENNAMETAL 1183312 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TPG321 geometry, designed for general-purpose metal cutting on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. It carries a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN under the KC850 manufacturer grade, which delivers a balance of moderate wear resistance and toughness across a range of workpiece materials. The insert measures 0.6495 inches in length with a 3/8 inch (0.3750 inch) inscribed circle, a 1/8 inch thickness, and a 1/64 inch (0.0156 inch) corner radius. A positive rake angle and honed cutting edge style support clean, consistent chip formation during turning, facing, and boring operations.
This insert is suited for production and job-shop environments where operators need a single insert grade that performs across steel, stainless steel, and cast iron. The flat-top chip breaker geometry and positive side clearance make it a practical choice for light-to-moderate depth-of-cut applications, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). It is held in place by a clamp-style toolholder and is identified by ANSI code TPG321 and ISO code TPG160304. The three cutting edges extend tool life between index cycles, reducing downtime in continuous turning applications.
Designed for use in clamp-style toolholders that accept ANSI TPG321 or ISO TPG160304 triangular inserts. Suitable for primary workpiece materials including steel and stainless steel, with additional rated performance in cast iron and special or super alloys per KC850 grade characteristics. Compatible with applications coded P, M, K, and S workpiece material classifications.
Machining technicians should index or replace this insert with the machine fully stopped and all axes at rest. Use the appropriate clamp and toolholder torque per the toolholder manufacturer specification. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for chips or debris before seating the insert to ensure proper contact and repeatable tool nose position. Positive-rake inserts require a toolholder geometry that supports the clearance angle — verify toolholder compatibility before installation.
