The KENNAMETAL 1183311 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for external and internal material removal on CNC and manual lathes. It carries the ANSI code TPG222 and ISO code TPG110308, placing it in the KENDEX series. The insert features a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN in the KC850 grade, which delivers moderate wear resistance with toughness suitable for interrupted and continuous cuts. The triangular insert shape provides 3 cutting edges, the flat-top chip breaker geometry produces a positive rake, and the honed cutting edge style reduces microchipping. Insert length is 11 mm (0.4331 inches) with a 0.25-inch inscribed circle and a 0.0313-inch corner radius.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces as well as select special and super alloys (ISO material codes P, M, K, S). It is held by clamp-style toolholders that accept TPG-style inserts. Typical applications include moderate to high material removal rates where both wear resistance and edge toughness are required. The flat-top chip breaker geometry is well matched to general-purpose finish and semi-finish turning passes at light to moderate depths of cut up to 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm).
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for TPG222 style clamp-held toolholders in the KENDEX series. Compatible with steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), and special or super alloy (S) workpiece materials as noted in the KC850 grade characteristics.
Installation of turning inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine powered down and the spindle fully stopped before indexing or replacing the insert. Use the correct clamp screw and torx key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to secure the insert; a loose clamp will cause insert movement and workpiece damage. Inspect the insert seat and shim for debris or wear before seating a new insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's speeds and feeds documentation for the KC850 grade when setting initial cutting parameters.
