The KENNAMETAL 1182970 is a solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal removal in CNC and manual turning applications. It carries the ANSI insert code SPG634 and ISO designation SPG190416, and belongs to the KENDEX series. The insert features a multilayer CVD coating — TiC, TiCN, and TiN — under the KC850 grade designation, which balances moderate wear resistance with toughness across a range of workpiece materials. With a 3/4-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch thickness, and a 1/16-inch corner radius, this neutral-hand insert provides four usable cutting edges per insert, making it a cost-effective choice for production environments.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron, as well as special and super alloys. The flat-top chip breaker geometry and positive rake angle promote clean chip formation at moderate cutting depths. A maximum depth of cut of approximately 0.049 inches (1.25 mm) makes this insert appropriate for finishing and light semi-finishing passes. Licensed machinists and CNC operators in job shop and production machining environments are the primary installers. The positive side clearance and honed cutting edge style reduce built-up edge on difficult materials.
Designed for use in clamp-style toolholders accepting SPG634 inserts per ANSI and ISO standards. Primary workpiece materials are steel (P) and stainless steel (M), with additional suitability for cast iron (K) and special or super alloys (S). Material grades C5 and C6 apply. Multi-use application spans turning, facing, and boring operations.
Insert installation and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine fully stopped and locked out. Seat the insert firmly in the toolholder pocket and secure with the appropriate clamp or screw per the toolholder manufacturer specification before resuming cutting operations. Inspect the insert pocket and clamp for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Do not exceed the recommended depth of cut for the insert grade and workpiece material combination.
