The KENNAMETAL 1182186 is a carbide threading insert designed for external thread-cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Running in the Top Notch series, it carries the NTC3R20E geometry and is manufactured to a KC730 grade with a Titanium Nitride (TiN) finish applied via PVD coating. The insert cuts UN-standard external threads at 20 TPI with a 60-degree included angle and a right-hand orientation. The corner radius measures 0.0062 inches (0.16 mm) and the tip-to-top height is 0.1480 inches (3.76 mm). Machinists and CNC operators use this insert for threading steel, cast iron, and similar C2-C4 material-grade workpieces in production turning applications.
This insert is suited for external threading operations in both job-shop and production environments where consistent thread form and tool life matter. The KC730 PVD-coated carbide grade is commonly selected for threading steel and ferrous materials where edge toughness and wear resistance are priorities. The Top Notch insert system uses a notch-style clamping mechanism, which positions and locks the insert securely in compatible Top Notch threading toolholders. Applications include producing UN-form external threads on shafts, fasteners, fittings, and similar turned components.
Designed for use in Top Notch series threading toolholders that accept size 3 NTC-style inserts. Compatible with C2, C3, and C4 material grade workpieces per the supplier specifications.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC tooling technician. Ensure the machine spindle is stopped and the turret is in a safe index position before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully into the Top Notch holder pocket and verify the notch engagement before clamping. Do not overtighten the clamp screw; use the toolholder manufacturer's recommended clamp torque procedure. Inspect the insert edge and corner radius condition at regular intervals to maintain thread form accuracy.
