The KENNAMETAL 1182163 is a carbide threading insert designed for cutting American Buttress threads on both internal and external workpiece profiles. Manufactured in the Top Notch series with an NTB insert style, it carries a KC730 grade carbide substrate and a Titanium Nitride (TiN) finish applied via PVD coating process. The insert covers an internal pitch range of 8 to 16 TPI and features an included angle of 45 degrees with a corner radius of 0.0065 inches. It is sized as an Insert Size 3 and is suited for use in C2, C3, and C4 material grade classifications. Installation is performed by machinists and toolroom technicians on CNC lathes and manual threading applications.
This insert is used in production and job-shop machining environments wherever American Buttress thread profiles are required on internal bores or external diameters. The right-hand cutting geometry makes it appropriate for standard right-hand threading operations. The TiN PVD coating provides a hard, wear-resistant surface that extends tool life across a range of ferrous and non-ferrous materials classified under C2, C3, and C4 material grades. Typical applications include threading operations on pipe flanges, actuator rods, and pressure vessel components where Buttress thread engagement is specified by design.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use insert for Top Notch series NTB-style threading toolholders accepting Insert Size 3 geometry in American Buttress thread applications.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine powered down and all spindle rotation stopped before handling. Use the appropriate Top Notch series insert clamp and torque the clamping screw according to the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Inspect the insert seat and clamp pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert. Follow all applicable shop safety procedures and machine guarding requirements during setup and operation.
