The KENNAMETAL 1181996 is a ceramic turning insert designated by industry standard code SNGA432T0820 and manufactured to the KY3500 grade. This uncoated silicon nitride ceramic insert features a square shape with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 0.0313-inch corner radius, and a T-Land cutting edge style with a flat top chip breaker. It carries a negative rake and negative side clearance geometry, making it well-suited for high-speed interrupted and continuous turning of cast iron components. Each insert provides 8 usable cutting edges, maximizing tool life per unit. The insert is held by clamp or pin in KENLOC-style toolholders and is compliant with both ANSI and ISO standards.
This insert is designed for turning, facing, and boring operations on cast iron workpieces, where high wear resistance and controlled toughness are required. The KY3500 silicon nitride ceramic grade is specifically formulated for cast iron machining, delivering performance from moderate to high wear conditions. The flat top chip breaker geometry is appropriate for roughing and semi-finishing passes at elevated cutting speeds. It is a multi-use insert applicable across production turning centers and manual lathes in industrial machining environments. This part is typically installed and managed by machinists and tooling technicians in job shop, aerospace, automotive, and general manufacturing settings.
Designed for use in KENLOC-style toolholders that accept SNGA-style inserts with a 0.2031-inch hole diameter. Verified compatible with ANSI insert code SNGA432 and ISO insert code SNGA120408. Suitable for turning, facing, and boring operations per the multi-use application rating from the manufacturer.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips or debris before seating the insert to prevent microcracking of the ceramic substrate. Ceramic inserts are brittle and should not be used for heavy interrupted cuts beyond their rated depth of cut without verifying application suitability with the toolholder manufacturer.
