Product Description

The KENNAMETAL 1181989 is a ceramic turning insert in the KENLOC series, manufactured under industry standard CNGA432T0820 with a KY3500 silicon nitride grade. Designed for high-speed machining of cast iron, this uncoated insert features an 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape, a flat-top chip breaker, and a T-Land cutting edge style. It carries a negative rake angle with neutral hand orientation, making it suitable for high wear-resistance to moderate wear-resistance and toughness applications. With 4 cutting edges and a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, it delivers consistent material removal in turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and machining centers.

This insert is intended for primary use on cast iron workpieces in production turning environments, both in roughing and finishing passes where wear resistance is the priority. The KY3500 silicon nitride ceramic grade performs at elevated cutting speeds where carbide inserts would wear prematurely. Typical applications include turning, facing, and boring on gray cast iron, ductile iron, and similar ferrous materials. It is held in place using a clamp and pin method, compatible with standard CNGA-style toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO specifications.

Key Features

  • Silicon nitride ceramic grade KY3500 optimized for high wear-resistance on cast iron
  • 80-degree diamond insert shape with T-Land cutting edge for reliable edge strength
  • 4 cutting edges per insert for extended tool life per unit
  • Flat-top chip breaker geometry for consistent chip control in turning, facing, and boring
  • Negative rake, neutral hand — fits standard CNGA clamp-and-pin toolholders
  • Conforms to ANSI insert code CNGA432 and ISO insert code CNGA120408

Compatibility

Designed for use in CNGA-style toolholders with clamp and pin insert retention, conforming to ANSI and ISO standards. Compatible with toolholder setups accepting CNGA432 (ANSI) or CNGA120408 (ISO) size code inserts.

Installation Notes

This insert is installed by a machinist or tooling technician into a CNGA-compatible toolholder using the clamp-and-pin retention method. Power down the machine and engage all lockouts before changing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before seating the insert. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches per pass as specified for this grade and geometry.
