The KENNAMETAL 1162897 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CPGM21.51 geometry, manufactured to ANSI and ISO standards (ISO code CPGM060204). Coated with TiN via a PVD process, this insert carries the KC730 grade designation, engineered for high wear-resistance to moderate toughness across steel, stainless steel, and cast iron applications. The 80-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with positive rake and positive side clearance promotes efficient chip evacuation. With an inscribed circle of 0.25 inches, an insert length of 0.2539 inches (6.45 mm), and a corner radius of 0.0156 inches (1/64 inch), the insert is held in place via a screw-on mounting method. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in production turning environments.
This insert is suited for external turning, facing, and boring operations on steel, stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium workpieces. The medium machining chip breaker profile makes it appropriate for general-purpose material removal passes where consistent chip control is required. The neutral hand orientation allows fitment in a range of standard CPGM-compatible toolholders. Applications span both roughing and finishing passes within the KC730 grade performance envelope, covering ISO material groups P, M, and K as primary designations, with S and M as secondary workpiece material groups.
Designed for use in CPGM-style screw-on toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO CPGM060204 specifications. Compatible with multi-use turning, facing, and boring applications on steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), superalloys, and titanium (S) workpiece materials.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the toolholder secured before seating or removing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to tighten the screw-on clamp to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper contact and accurate geometry.
