The KENNAMETAL 1162581 is a solid carbide turning insert in the KENDEX series, designed for precision metal removal on CNC and manual lathes. It carries the ANSI designation SNG432 and ISO code SNG120408, featuring a square insert shape with a 0.5-inch inscribed circle, a 3/16-inch thickness, and a 1/32-inch corner radius. The K68 uncoated carbide grade delivers high wear resistance across a range of workpiece materials. With 8 available cutting edges and a flat-top chip breaker geometry, this insert offers extended tool life between index cycles. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shops and production environments are the primary installers of this tooling.
This insert is suited for turning, facing, and boring operations on non-ferrous metals, stainless steel, cast iron, superalloys, and titanium. Its neutral hand orientation allows use in both right- and left-hand toolholders that accept SNG-style inserts. The flat-top, negative-rake geometry supports stable cutting at moderate depths. Maximum depth of cut is 0.0492 inches (1.25 mm). The K68 grade is rated for high to moderate wear resistance and toughness across ISO material groups M, K, and N, making it a versatile choice for mixed-material production runs.
Designed for use in SNG-style toolholders that accept a 0.5-inch inscribed circle square insert with clamp-style retention. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards for SNG432 geometry. Verify toolholder pocket dimensions and clamping compatibility before installation.
Installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine fully stopped and the spindle locked. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten the clamp screw. Inspect the insert seat and clamp for debris or damage before seating a new insert. Follow your facility's lockout/tagout procedure before any tooling change.
