The KENNAMETAL 1162433 is a TCMT-style solid carbide turning insert in the KC850 grade, designed for precision turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. This insert carries a multilayer CVD coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN, which provides a balance of moderate wear resistance and toughness across a wide range of workpiece materials. With a 60-degree triangular shape, positive rake geometry, and a honed cutting edge, the 1162433 delivers controlled chip formation during finishing and light machining cuts. Installed by machinists and toolroom technicians, it mounts via a screw-on holding method and offers three usable cutting edges per insert.
This insert is suited for finishing and light machining passes on steel, stainless steel, and cast iron, as well as special and super alloys. Its KC850 grade characteristics cover ISO material groups P, M, K, and S, making it a versatile choice across job shop and production environments where a single insert grade handles multiple material transitions. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for low feed rate finishing work, producing tight, manageable chips at shallow depths of cut. Typical applications include shaft turning, facing operations on chucked parts, and light boring on bar work in both horizontal and vertical turning configurations.
Designed for use in screw-on style TCMT toolholders conforming to ANSI insert code TCMT432 and ISO insert code TCMT220408. Compatible with toolholders accepting a 0.5-inch inscribed circle triangular insert with a 0.2165-inch screw hole diameter. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards for interchangeable indexable insert systems.
Installation is performed by machinists or toolroom technicians using the appropriate torx or hex key to secure the insert screw to the manufacturer-specified feel — do not overtighten, as this can crack the carbide. Ensure the insert pocket and seating surface are clean and free of chips or debris before seating the insert. Power down or engage the E-stop on the machine before indexing or replacing inserts. Always verify insert orientation and chip breaker direction against the toolholder setup sheet before resuming cuts.
