The KENNAMETAL 1162431 is a TCMT-style solid carbide turning insert in Kennametal grade KC850, designed for precision turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a multilayer CVD coating — TiC, TiCN, and TiN — applied over a carbide substrate to deliver moderate wear resistance combined with high toughness. The insert measures 16.5 mm (0.6495 inches) in length with a 3/8-inch (0.375-inch) inscribed circle and a 1/32-inch corner radius. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing and light machining cuts, and the honed cutting edge style supports consistent performance at tighter tolerances.
This insert is suited for turning steel and stainless steel as primary workpiece materials, and is also applicable to cast iron and special or super alloys. The neutral hand orientation and screw-on holding method make it compatible with standard TCMT toolholders used in both roughing and finishing programs where light depths of cut are specified. Maximum recommended depth of cut is 1.25 mm (0.0492 inches). Typical applications include external turning, facing passes, and light boring in ISO P and M material categories, with secondary use in K and S categories.
Designed for use in TCMT-style screw-on toolholders conforming to ANSI insert code TCMT3252 and ISO insert code TCMT16T308. Suitable for CNC turning centers and manual lathes equipped with appropriate TCMT pocket toolholders. Meets ANSI and ISO standards for this insert geometry.
Installation is performed by a machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the correct Torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw firmly without overtightening, as excess torque can fracture the carbide insert. Inspect the toolholder pocket for debris or wear before seating a new insert to ensure proper contact and runout accuracy.
