The KENNAMETAL 1162412 is a round (RCMT) solid carbide turning insert in the KC850 grade, designed for screw-on toolholders used in CNC turning, facing, and boring operations. It carries a multilayer CVD coating — TiC, TiCN, and TiN — that provides a balance of wear resistance and toughness across a range of workpiece materials. The insert has a 3/8 inch (0.3750 inch) inscribed circle, a 5/32 inch (0.1563 inch) thickness, and a 3/16 inch (0.1875 inch) corner radius. Its full-radius round shape distributes cutting forces evenly, reducing the risk of chipping on interrupted cuts. Licensed machinists and CNC setup technicians are the primary installers of this insert type.
This insert is suited for medium machining of steel and stainless steel as primary workpiece materials, with secondary application on cast iron and special or super alloys. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with both right-hand and left-hand tooling configurations. The RCMT32.5 ANSI code and RCMT097300 ISO code confirm broad international toolholder compatibility. The screw-on holding method provides positive insert retention under high cutting forces. Typical applications include external and internal turning, shoulder facing, and shallow boring passes at moderate depths of cut up to 0.0492 inch (1.25 mm).

Installation is performed by machining technicians using the appropriate Torx or hex key for the screw-on retention fastener specified by the toolholder manufacturer. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Inspect the toolholder pocket for chips or debris before seating the new insert, as contamination in the pocket will affect insert seating and surface finish. Do not overtighten the clamp screw beyond the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque.
