The KENNAMETAL 1162402 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VBMT style, designed for precision turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations on CNC and manual lathes. It carries the ANSI insert designation VBMT331LF and ISO designation VBMT160404. The insert is manufactured with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiC, TiCN, and TiN under the proprietary KC850 grade, which delivers moderate wear resistance combined with toughness for steel, stainless steel, and cast iron workpieces. The LF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing and light machining passes. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in production or maintenance turning will find this insert suited to tight-tolerance surface finish requirements.
This insert is intended for finishing and light machining of steel (ISO P), stainless steel (ISO M), cast iron (ISO K), and special or super alloys (ISO S) in both industrial and job-shop environments. The positive rake and positive side clearance reduce cutting forces, making it a practical choice for thin-wall components, small-diameter bores, and back-turning operations where vibration control matters. The screw-on holding method provides repeatable seating in compatible toolholders with a standard 0.1732-inch hole diameter. Maximum recommended depth of cut is 1.25 mm (0.0492 inches), confirming its finishing-pass application.
Designed for use in screw-on VBMT-style toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO standards. Compatible with toolholders accepting a VBMT 3/8-inch inscribed circle insert with a B clearance code and M tolerance code. Suitable for multi-use applications including turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is removed or the turret is locked before seating or replacing the insert. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to tighten the clamping screw to the toolholder manufacturer's specified torque — do not overtighten, as carbide inserts are brittle and will crack under excess clamping force. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before mounting to maintain accurate insert positioning and surface finish results.
