Product Description

The KENNAMETAL 1162401 is a VBMT3305LF-geometry turning insert in grade KC850, designed for precision metal removal on CNC and manual lathes. It features a 35-degree diamond (rhombic) shape with a positive rake angle and a honed cutting edge. The insert carries a multilayer CVD coating — TiC, TiCN, and TiN — applied over a solid carbide substrate, delivering a balance of wear resistance and toughness suited to finishing and light machining passes. With a 0.0079-inch corner radius and a maximum depth of cut of 0.0492 inches, this insert is optimized for close-tolerance finishing work on steel and stainless steel.

This insert is suited for turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring operations in production and job-shop environments. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO P) and stainless steel (ISO M), with additional capability on cast iron (ISO K) and special or super alloys (ISO S). The screw-on holding method makes it compatible with standard VBMT-style toolholders. The LF chip breaker geometry is engineered for finishing and light machining, controlling chips effectively at lower feed rates and depths of cut typical of final-pass work.

Key Features

  • KC850 grade with multilayer CVD coating (TiC, TiCN, TiN) for moderate wear resistance and high toughness across steel, stainless, and cast iron
  • 35-degree diamond insert shape (ANSI VBMT3305, ISO VBMT160402) with positive rake and 5-degree relief angle
  • LF chip breaker optimized for finishing and light machining chip control
  • Honed cutting edge style for improved edge stability on difficult materials
  • 2 cutting edges per insert; screw-on holding method for secure, repeatable seating
  • Multi-use application: turning, facing, boring, back turning, and back boring

Compatibility

Designed for use in VBMT-style screw-on toolholders conforming to ANSI and ISO standards. Suitable for steel (P), stainless steel (M), cast iron (K), and special or super alloys (S) workpiece materials per ISO material group classifications.

Installation Notes

Installation is performed by a machinist or toolroom technician using the appropriate VBMT screw-on toolholder. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is clear of the workpiece before seating or replacing the insert. Use the manufacturer-specified torque driver or wrench for the clamping screw to avoid over-torquing the insert pocket. Inspect the toolholder pocket and locating surfaces for chips or wear before seating a new insert.
